Mom and I have grandma’s King James Bible. It is so old and worn out. We are trying to hold it together with Elmer’s glue and tape. Many of grandma’s notes in it are difficult to make out because they have faded so much but there is something that she wrote on a sheet of notebook paper and stuck it in the very back of her Bible that I want to share here.
A couple of things that I want to emphasize are the points she makes in (1) not lusting after the world, and (2) the Lord’s commandment to love one another. Today, during this time of the great apostasy, we see the church hugely lusting after the world. And what I call “the great divide” is the separation of those who have no love for others. The greatest love the church has today is for money, false gods, and celebrities. Jesus Christ is either way down the list or does not even make the list.
It is evident by the behavior of so many professing Christian people that they have no idea what the word “godliness” really means. I can tell you what is does not mean. It has absolutely nothing to do with working in a church or being hailed on a stage as some great one. The godliest Christians are those we never hear about who are so focused on their personal relationship with the Lord and going about the business which the Lord sent them to do that they have no time to notice if anyone is keeping tabs on them or taking pictures, or trying to get some celebrities attention so they can be on a so called “Christian” network to tell the world what a great Christian they are.
Grandma’s notes here are short and to the point. If we fail in these five things then we are blind, live in darkness, and have no vision. Vision is what these false preachers have distorted today. Vision is not about how God is going to make you rich and famous. It is not about building any earthly kingdom. Vision is about things to come, and about spiritual discernment, and learning to discern the times. If you do not know what the difference between ‘Bible’ prophecy and ‘personal’ prophecy is then you have no vision.
From grandma’s notes,
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that [pertain] unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2 Peter 1:3-4
To live the Christian life and never fall and to receive an acquittance entrance into the Kingdom
Be a partaker of His Divine nature.
- Do not lust after the world.
- Believe the promises He gave us.
- Have the knowledge of God.
- Be temperate, patient, and godly.
- And godliness will lead us to kindness and love. The new commandment Jesus gave us to love one another.
These things must stay with us to make us grateful in Christ. If we lack this we are blind and grope in darkness, without a vision.
